About Me
Michael Costa is a production executive and theatrical operations leader specializing in large-scale live performance, touring logistics, and institutional production strategy. Known for his ability to bridge artistry and execution, he leads complex productions with clarity, fiscal discipline, and collaborative strength.
Michael currently serves as Technical Director of Mechanics Hall in Worcester, MA, where he oversees all technical and production operations for one of New England’s most historic and acoustically celebrated performance venues. Leading live sound, lighting, video integration, and touring advances, he supports a diverse portfolio of concerts, corporate events, galas, and rental productions while guiding infrastructure modernization and long-term technical planning.
Previously, Michael served as Director of Production for Boston Lyric Opera, directing the execution of mainstage, site-specific, and digital productions with annual operating budgets exceeding $3.6 million. His tenure included productions such as Carousel (2025), Madame Butterfly (2023), and Omar, the Pulitzer Prize–winning work recognized in 2023. In this role, he supervised union labor forces of 75+ crew members, negotiated vendor and co-production agreements, and coordinated multi-venue logistics to deliver ambitious artistic visions safely and on budget.
He later joined Reagle Music Theatre as Production Manager, guiding a full summer season of large-scale musicals from first design meetings through final performance. Earlier in his career, he held leadership roles at National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene, managing the Off-Broadway debut of Harmony (Barry Manilow/Warren Carlyle), co-productions with New York City Opera, and the remount of Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish.
Beyond individual productions, Michael is deeply invested in the long-term sustainability of performance spaces and production systems. As Lead Theatrical Consultant for the restoration of Edmund J. Safra Hall at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, he contributed to the modernization of a historic venue’s infrastructure—reflecting his commitment to both artistic excellence and operational longevity.
Rooted in strategic planning, union collaboration, and technical fluency, Michael approaches each project as both a creative endeavor and an operational ecosystem. Whether stewarding a multimillion-dollar season or advancing a single performance, he builds environments where teams can work confidently and artistry can thrive.
He currently serves as Secretary of the USITT New England Board of Directors and remains an advocate for mentorship, innovation, and thoughtful leadership within the performing arts community.
